Congenital Heart Defects - Patent Ductus Arteriosus (PDA)

What’s wrong?

  • Occurs if the ductus arteriosus does not close after birth
  • Abnormal circulation of blood between two of the major arteries near to the heart
  • Blood flows directly from the aorta into the PA, which can put strain on the heart and increase the pressure in the lung arteries (pulmonary hypertension)
  • In New Born ( Neonates), due to presence of large PDA, baby may not be able to wean off from Ventilator if the baby with large PDA is ventilated

Corrective Procedures?

  1. Non-Surgical Method

    • Device closure

  2. Surgical Method

    • Ligation with sutures or clips

What are the possible complications after the procedures?

  1. Non-Surgical Method

In very rare circumstances, the Device that is deployed can get dislodged.

  2. Surgical Closure

    • Residual PDA –Due to recanalization, incomplete closure, re-opening of PDA
    • Voice/Weak Cry – due to Left Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve injury – usually temporary and recover completely
    • Chylothorax – collection of Chyle ( fatty fluid ) in the chest – which may require drainage if it is significant amount
