Congenital Heart Defects - Tetralogy of Fallot

What’s wrong?

  • A combination of four heart problems:

    • Right Ventricular Outflow Tract Obstruction
    • Ventricular septal defect
    • Overriding of the aorta
    • Right ventricular hypertrophy

Corrective Procedures?

  • VSD patch closure

    • An angled patch placed over the large VSD serves to channel left ventricular blood into the overriding aorta

  • Repair of narrowing along the RV outflow track

    • Trans-annular patchplasty (TAP) - using patch to augment the narrowed part of pulmonary artery and right ventricular outflow tract (Creating with Monocusp Valve to prevent regurgitation in Pulmonary Valve)

What are the possible complications after the procedures?

  1. Arrhythmias - ventricular arrhythmias are most common
  2. Persistent pleural effusion - requiring prolong chest tube drainage
Since after the insertion of Monocusp Valve in RV Outflow Tract – patients tend to recover much faster without significant complications.
