Congenital Heart Defects - Congenitally Corrected TGA (ccTGA) |
What’s wrong?
- Normally the right atrium empties into the right ventricle then to the pulmonary artery. Now the right atrium empties into the morphological left ventricle which give rise to the pulmonary artery
- Similarly in the normal heart, the left atrium empties into the left ventricle then to the aorta. Now the left atrium empties into the morphological right ventricle which give rise to the aorta

Corrective Procedures?
This condition can only be corrected with open heart surgery.
- Usually surgery is complex - the surgical team will explain the types of operation (Double switch operation, Rastelli-Senning)
Patient is pink because blood flows in the correct sequence but the
pumping chambers are now switched.
Main problems
- Right ventricle unable to sustain systemic pressures
- Associated with tricuspid valve abnormalities
- Development of complete heart block
Solutions
- Medication for congestive cardiac failure symptoms
- Permanent pacemaker
- Surgery could be of slightly higher risk than other congenital cardiac surgical procedures
