Congenital Heart Defects - Atrioventricular Septal Defect (AVSD)
with Cleft and Deformity of Mitral and Tricuspid Valves

What’s wrong?

  • Partial AVSD
  • Primum ASD
  • 'Cleft' in the AV (mitral) valve
  • Complete AVSD
  • Primum ASD and VSD
  • Malformation of the valves that divides the atria and ventricles

Corrective Procedures?

This condition can only be corrected with open heart surgery.

  1. Partial AVSD

    • Closure of ASD with a patch
    • Left sided AV Valve repair with sutures

  2. Complete AVSD

    • PA banding may be carried out if total repair not possible
    • Closure of ASD and VSD with a patch ( Two Patch/One Patch Technique) and reconstruction of Left and Right sided Atrio-Ventricular Valves

What are the possible complications after the procedures?

  1. Arrhythmia (Irregular Heart Rhythm)

    • Heart block may require permanent pacemaker in 1-2%
    • Sinus node dysfunction

  2. Residual leaking of repaired valves

May require medical therapy and or surgical re-intervention for the valves if leakage is significant.
